Many people spend hours a day driving back and forth to work or transporting others to activities. Time in the car can be an opportunity to develop godly character. The fast pace of our lives, especially on the roads, requires concentration, alertness, purpose, and courage! “So be alert [give strict attention, be cautious and active in faith], for you do not know which day [whether near or far] your Lord is coming.” Matt 24:42
In the past, I may have suggested car time to include phone conversations, audible books, podcasts, or news shows. Still cautious and raw from a motor vehicle accident myself, I now recommend full concentration - not only of your own vehicle, but of the changing environment around you. Again, be ever alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming.
Life in New Testament times was much slower than today. People generally walked. The only specific statement about traveling in the Bible is in Deut 6:7 “Repeat them (God’s commands) again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.”
Here are a few verses to meditate on or repeat before or during your rides.
“A man’s mind plans his way [as he journeys through life], But the Lord directs his steps and establishes them.” Pro 16:9 AMP.
“The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in [everything that you do] From this time forth and forever.”Ps121:8 AMP
“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
1 Cor10:31NLT
'Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” 1Peter 5:8NLT
“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deut 6:6,7NLT
We thank you Father God, for placing us at this time in history, a time when travel is so much quicker, more comfortable, and easier. Give us wisdom in our travels. Help us to remember your greater plan for each of us: to reflect godly love and character in all we do.
