The Daycare director and I were on our way to lunch,. I had just shared that I would be leaving work in hospital administration to stay home with our four-year-old and our soon-to-be-born second child. As we pulled open the double doors to the cafeteria, she looked at me with amazement and said, “Why would you ever do that? You’re going to lose all your critical thinking skills and brain capacity.”
Being new in faith, I didn’t know how to explain that I had just read and understood 2 Cor 10:12: "We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God and we take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ”. Right there I was stuck. I think I murmured something like, “I’ll be studying the Bible more.” which sounds so feeble now.
How do we capture every thought? Those random thoughts that pop up can either be distractions or inspirations from the Holy Spirit.
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” Phil 4:8 and Rom 12:2 NLT
“Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.” Ps.119:18NLT
“Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’” Matt 22:37NLT
Think about it: What skills or helps can you find to “take every thought captive for Christ”? If you can’t think of any, ask God. He will answer.
Thank you, Father, for the Word of God which gives us instructions on what to put into our minds. Thank you that you encourage us to fix our thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. We thank you that your delight is when we think about things that are excellent and worth of praise.
